pinepigs_garden: a sprouting potato (potato)

Blessed 2011 to you all! I hope your year is filled with birth, growth, peace, serenity.

To those of you in the winter climes, have you started looking at the seed catalogues and planning your spring planting? (I know at least one of you has!) Those of us in the summer lands, how is your garden growing? Faster than the weeds?

I dug around in the first Red Rascal potato bag I planted and the first Urenika bag I planted and we have new potatoes on the first day of the new year! I've only harvested about 1/4 or so of the RR bag (it had 4 seed potatoes in it). I pulled a few smallish ones out a few weeks ago (maybe 300 grams all up??). Today I've pulled a whopping 1.2 kilograms of Red Rascals out, with the largest being 300 grams and the smallest being about 10 grams. There were 10 of them.

I didn't dig around in the Urenikas as much since this was for company tomorrow and I didn't expect there to be much done in there. I was pleasantly surprised! The seed potatoes I had were tiny and I'd read that these were small potatoes. I expected things that were maybe thumb-sized. I got bigger ones! They aren't huge but will be a good size for eating. I'm looking forward to having them for dinner tomorrow. I pulled out about 325 grams of these, the largest being about 120 grams and the smallest about 20 grams. I only pulled 5 of these out. I didn't expect them to be ready yet but thought I'd do a dig around to see what I could find.

PS- I planted these Red Rascals on 21 August, not sure when I planted the Urenikas but know they were planted by 9 Oct.

There are pictures of course!

The haul:

Those potatoes look awesome! Man, I so wish that I had a garden of some sort, but I'm completely devoid of land here in the city. :(

I'm in a suburb, part of 4 single-story units. I don't have a large back area & about 1/2 of it is cement or brick. Just about everything is in pots, partly because we rent and partly because I don't have a lot of room to just plop something in the ground. The potatoes were grown in bags made for them, they're the kind of stuff tarps are made out of. The company that makes them has really found a niche in doing that kind of thing (including strawberry bags and rectangular mini-gardens) for people who live in city/suburb areas.

I don't think I could survive without some bit of garden, even if it was just a small wooden box or 2. It's a part of my stress relief, part of my soul-nourishment as well as my body. I don't garden on a large scale so I don't provide all my own food (or even a portion of it really) but I like to have fresh tomatoes and herbs as well as the occassional carrot or spinach. And now potato!

Oh, if I had even an concrete slab I'd totally have a container garden. I live in a large city row house and the house takes up the entire plot, so there's really no where to plant anything. We tried our roof when we first moved in, but the roof can't support a garden, even a small one, and we can't afford the sort of renovations we'd need to get it to that point. There's basil in the window, and a house plant in my room, and we had some watercress at one point, though it finally died, but it's pretty tough to find a spot that has enough sunlight to grow anything. Maybe I could grow mushrooms...

I pictured you in a tight spot or upper story where you couldn't have a garden. Roof gardening sounds interesting but I'd be too lazy to haul myself/supplies up there! And yeah, the renovation costs would be pretty high.

I didn't do so well with the mushrooms myself and have decided to not keep it going. I'll see if anything comes of the 2nd set I started, no real hopes on that though. Too much work and I've decided to put my energy into the other plants.

They were tasty! I could almost imagine the antioxidants going into my blood and muscles from the Urenikas. They are a rich indigo purpley-blue mostly through but the larger one was streaked with some white. I wanted to take picts of the cut ones but was running behind in my food prep so my guests had come over by the time I got to them. I was too embarassed (and too busy) to pull out the camera. It's the first of several crops so I'll get the chance again in the future.
