I'm in a suburb, part of 4 single-story units. I don't have a large back area & about 1/2 of it is cement or brick. Just about everything is in pots, partly because we rent and partly because I don't have a lot of room to just plop something in the ground. The potatoes were grown in bags made for them, they're the kind of stuff tarps are made out of. The company that makes them has really found a niche in doing that kind of thing (including strawberry bags and rectangular mini-gardens) for people who live in city/suburb areas.
I don't think I could survive without some bit of garden, even if it was just a small wooden box or 2. It's a part of my stress relief, part of my soul-nourishment as well as my body. I don't garden on a large scale so I don't provide all my own food (or even a portion of it really) but I like to have fresh tomatoes and herbs as well as the occassional carrot or spinach. And now potato!
