I usually pick a rose here or there, maybe a few at a time. But I had something unfortunate happen on Christmas day and ended up having a bouquet of 8. I was showing C some of the flowers on Lasting Love and since they were on the lawn and we were on the path below them I pulled them gently down so she could smell them.
It was a gentle pull, I swear! Sadly there was a little crack sound. I thought it wasn't good but didn't realise how bad it was.

I didn't realise what happened until I let go and the whole stalk sagged towards me. Nnnnnnnooooooooooooooo. I snapped the leader stalk at the base, where it joined the main part of the plant. It was a fairly clean snap at least. I quickly harvested the roses and separated the rest of the stalk off, trimmed some leaves off and popped it into a pot of soil I have some small tomato plants in. I'm really hoping it roots, it should do since usually roses are pretty good at that. I checked the orphaned plant today (3 days later) and the few leaves left on the plant are still doing well so fingers crossed.
Here's a pict of the roses. They are gorgeous larger roses with a lovely "rosey" scent. They don't last long cut or on the plant sadly, but are worth it for the beauty of the roses and scent.
And check out those shiny leaves! This is a happy plant can ya tell? (And no, that isn't Just Juice!! It's a 3litre bottle of worm wee! Most of my plants are doing really well between the worm tea, tank water and occassional sheep pellets & blood and bone. I think the regular watering over the summer has really made a difference too. The plants are healthier overall (except the tomatoes, there's an issue with mildew on the plants but not too terrible yet).
I'm hoping to do more 'harvest' posts through the season. Usually it's only a few berries here, a couple tomatoes there, whatever. So I might not get the chance to do photo posts for all of them, but we'll see.
