pinepigs_garden: trowel with dirt and a small plant with the words "Please grow" (Please grow)

It's been awhile. I've been busy & autumn is here. We've done our time change, days are shorter and cooler. I need to get out and do a bunch of weeding but we're going through a drought here so trying to pull weeds out of dry soil is tough going. I've gotten accustomed to the rainier weather here than Calif and haven't watered quite as much as I should have this season. Although saying that, I did better this year than I did last year so I haven't lost anything yet. Close on 2 camelias though, I didn't realise they weren't getting any of the spray from the irrigation I put in and haven't been looking good.

But hey, feijoa harvest picts! C loves this time of year, she's big on her feijoas. We've gotten 2 decent-sized harvests already and there's still some on the tree (which is maybe 6 to 7 feet high and about 3 to 4 years old). It's one of the few fruit trees (along with the lemon) that is in the ground & not in pots.

First photo of feijoas. Rest of feijoa spam & other picts & update below the cut.

Here's me holding a big bunch of them but it's hard to see how much it is.

So here's a better view. This is my 80-200mm lens.

There's still about that much at least on the tree.

Terrariums
I've done a bit of work on my terrariums. I had collected a bunch of moss from a friend's wood pile and put it in sealed containers. It went pretty well but now they're redish and not looking good :*( I don't think any of it is happy so I've opened them all up. Hopefully I'll be able to salvage some.

And another blow to my terrariums? I was watching a friend's goldfish while it was on holiday. we put it up on top of the bookcase since it doesn't have a top and the cats would hook it out of it's bowl and eat it. I would often cover it with a small towel so the cats wouldn't get too interested and wouldn't get into it.

Remember this terrarium?

Well it doesn't exist anymore :( I moved the towel off one day and a candle holder jumped off the top and landed on the edge of the brandy glass. Thick, heavy candle holder meeting thin, fine brandy glass led to the destruction of the 2nd. I've transplanted the club moss and the other mosses that I had in there into one of the jars I picked up at the thrift store for $1 each (the middle one).

And I took an old terrarium I made a couple years ago out of stained glass & planted some of my dendrobium orchids in it.

At least they are doing ok. My other terrariums, the one in the jug and the oregano one I made for a friend for their Christmas gift, are doing well. I've had to weed the jar again. Oh! And while I lost out on a Trade Me auction for w good-sized jars for terrariums, a friend was cleaning up under their house for inorganic collection when he came across 2 perfect jugs for terrariums for me. They are about the same as the one I made but with a slightly wider mouth. I can't get my hand in it but can get a few fingers in at least. I want to plan out what to do with them but did scrub them up. Maybe some NZ fuchsia, either Fuchsia procumbens or Fuchsia procumbens variegata. I'd like to put another more up-right native in too, one that doesn't get very large but not sure what yet so I need to think it over. There's the old standby of maiden hair ferns or this of the maiden hairs, perhaps the rosy MH, that sounds interesting. Or the maiden hair with brown hairs

Ok, need to get onto my book so I'll cut this here. I've got some picts of the garden from last month but I'll save those for next time. Happy growing to those of you who are moving into spring! Happy hibernating to those of us in the Southern Hemisphere.
